Comments Ho-lee shit. Kate's graduation was today, so I went to that in the morning. Then we went out for a late lunch after, where I was seduced by $2 Labatt Blue drafts. All to soon it was time for the Lilac Games to commence. Here's the meet schedule (this might be just a rough approximation of the order):
1500m Steeplechase
200m dash
Shotput
400m hurdles
100m hurdles
800m racewalk
Javelin
100m dash prelims
100m dash finals
Beer mile
There were 9 competitors, split into 3 teams. Team Skunk Car (Chebot, Mueller, me), Team Epilepsy, and Team High School Singlet.
The steeple was rough, and I ended up dogging it to save energy for the later events. I ended up 9th, but if I had gone all out the best I probably would have done was 7th or 8th.

Comments Rock Creek Park trails, including the PAT. Ran after getting home from the Servathon - my work's annual day of community service. We went out to the Roaches Run Water Fowl Sanctuary and pulled out invasive species. I ended up running pretty slowly because of the weight lifting I did yesterday (legs only). It was beautiful in the woods in the middle of the day, especially on the PAT near the brook. The best thing was that I had the trails all to myself.

Made a conscious effort to push the uphills, of which there were some significant ones (Mass Ave, especially). So many bugs out tonight. I might have to start re-routing my runs along Constitution Ave instead of the Reflecting Pool.
Chugged some soda after the run and thought my stomach was going to explode from the carbonation.

Comments Hot and humid half marathon in Frederick, MD. Drove up on Saturday for the race expo and packet pickup. Saw Tom and Andy at the expo. Andy ran the 5k on Saturday, but Tom was in the half with me. Also found out he's living in DC, so he might be interested in joining up with GRC.
I woke up at 4:30am to get a bagel, which ended up being too late, probably, for a 6:30am race. I was out of the hotel by 5:15am, which was also too late as I ran into some serious traffic. They changed the parking all around and a lot of people were late getting to the start or had to ditch their cars along the side of the road. I made it to the start line with 15 seconds to spare, just as the National Anthem was hitting it's climax. I lined up next to Tom Rhodes and Jimmy Daly. Tom took it out fast, but I stayed with him. First mile was 5:16. I knew that was too fast, so I slowed it up a bit. After about two miles I was feeling out of it and was about ready to throw in the towel. At three miles the self loathing kicked in. It was so humid and hot (even that early in the morning), and it was taking its toll on me. My watch fell off right around the 3 mile mark, and I left it for dead, not really caring to know what pace I was running. All of a sudden, this girl runs up behind me and hands me my watch. I replied, "Oh, thanks. My race is shot, do you need a pacer?" To which she replied, "No thanks, I'm just running a workout." Then I took a look at her and was dumbfounded. "Oh, you're Shalane Flanagan!" She just smiled and said, "You're not out of it yet, there's still a lot of race left to run." This little pep talk got me fired up, so I sped off and starting clicking off 5:40s (I'll update with my actual splits when I get my watch in front of me). Shalane and I kept running together for the rest of the race, with her helping me catch one of the guys in front of me to move into 4th, and then slowly working my way up to the 3rd place guy. One of the mid-race comments was "You need to work on your hill running!" Which is true. Especially over the last three miles when the hills got worse I was not covering them well. I did manage to maintain my pace, though. I caught up to third place with about half a mile to go, and passed him once we entered the final stretch of gravel in front of the bandstand. I had the momentum, and I would have beaten him if not for some very untimely booting, which I did all over the side of the Care First health insurance banners lining the final stretch (see image). This cost me 3rd place and the extra $50 that would have come with it. I must have been extremely dehydrated or something at this point, because that has never happened to me before in a race or workout (although it has been a goal of mine since 8th grade track).
After crossing the finish line I heard the announcer say, "Congratulations, Molly Pritz!" I just assumed that Shalane was running under a pseudonym since she was only doing a workout, so I played it off and was like, "Good job, "Molly" *wink, wink*" We talked for a while after the race and posed for pictures, vomit-covered singlet and all.
After the race I threw on my trainers over my destroyed feet (sock were too thick for my flats) and went for about a mile jog to my car. I drove back to the hotel and ran for another mile there. They'll have to mail me any trophies, but I think they only give trophies to the top 3. Anyway, I have a $100 check that should be on its way shortly. Not a bad payday for a mediocre race.
I went to Klim's birthday party at RCP after a long nap and drive home to DC. I told everyone about how I met Shalane Flanagan, then I went home and told all of RunPartner and Facebook the same thing. However, BMac pointed out that Shalane ran a 5k at Stanford on Saturday night. "Hmmmm," I thought to myself. "Maybe it was all a hallucination. Maybe there actually IS a Molly Pritz." Turns out, there is, and I was mistaken for an entire day. In my defense, they do look very similar, and I wasn't wearing my glasses during of after the race (as anyone could attest to based on the number of wrong turns I made). Bottom line: Maybe it's about time I start racing in contacts.

Comments Ran the AU loop, but instead of cutting down Wisco I took the trails down to the Towpath, then ran along the Potomac until I hooked back up with the regular AU loop. I was feeling good, and my pace kept creeping up. At first I tried to consciously slow myself down, but I wasn't doing a very good job. Eventually I just let myself go and I ended up running pretty quickly for most of the run. When I ran by Joe's house I saw his helicopter leaving. Not sure if he was in it or not, but it was pretty cool, nonetheless. I also saw a helicopter landing at the White House last week, so within a week I've seen (probably) Marine One and Two doing their respective things.

Comments Almost the same loop as yesterday, except I spent more time on the trails and less on the road. Rainy, but that made it muddy and thus more fun in the woods. Started out pretty slowly, but picked it up through the run and finished with 6 hard striders.

Comments I wanted to get in some miles before it started to rain, so I ran the Van Ness loop, incorporating the difficult trail. Felt pretty good. Lots of those little gnats that fly in clouds.

Comments Down the Glover Archibald trail to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. 90% of the run was on trails, which was great. Quad felt better today. Was really nice and sunny this morning, but it's supposed to rain for the rest of the day. Thought I saw Rahm Emanuel, but to my dismay it was just some other short dude with grey hair and nine fingers.

Comments Good Georgetown loop, except my legs felt a little heavy. Left quad had a knot in it, and legs were still a little sore. Was going to meet up with PMurph and Dylan for a track workout, but I forgot I had a meeting after work. Ran past the Social Safeway, which is coming along nicely. Bugs are out again, especially down by the river and near the Reflecting Pool.

Comments Long run after work. Started out just running on whatever streets I wanted to. Ran through the zoo and didn't see a single person. I thought for a moment I was going to have a repeat of the time I got locked in the zoo on a run. From the zoo I ran up Connecticut, then cut up Newark and started running on back roads and trails, mostly following Reno, then stumbled upon Connecticut again once I was in Chevy Chase, MD. Ran up that road to East-West Highway, then followed that into Bethesda past the BCC track, which I stopped at to see if the guys were still working out (they weren't). Finished the run by running down Wisconsin to Massachusetts, then back on Cleveland or some other road that leads to Cleveland Park, then Adams Morgan to my house.
Good run, but it got a little scary at night out in the suburbs. I feel much more comfortable running at night in Columbia Heights.
I decided on this run that to motivate my sorry self I will run every day for the next 100 days. The minimum amount for a day to count is 2 miles.
MORE: Here is the original post from when I got locked in the zoo (July 26, 2006): "my legs felt great. i got locked in the zoo, however, which wasn't so great. eventually i found a security guard who let me out in a part of dc that i had never seen before... so needless to say i got lost and my 13 miler quickly became a 16 miler. i also tripped on a wire and wiped out hard. my hip is still a little sore, and i have a few scrapes on my back, but nothing major. all-in-all it was a good run. it got my adrenaline flowing, at least, which helped me keep up a good pace."

Distance 6.00 mi

Conditions Light Rain

Overall Feeling Bad
Comments Ran to Charlotte's house via Q street, side streets in Georgetown, and a trail I stumbled upon a trail that I followed to 38th and W, although I'm sure it links up to the trails that run behind Charlotte's house and up to American.
Felt good for the first half of the run, then felt sluggish for the second half.
