Time of day 9:30 AM
Distance 4.00 mi
Shoe Adrenaline Gts 11 (17)
Route Buffalo Out and Back
Comments Very easy run - first one since the marathon. It felt great through the first mile, but then my quads and hamstrings started to cramp up. I stopped and stretched near the buffalo, then ran (slowly) home. Clearly I'm not as recovered as I had thought.

Mon November 7th - 0.25mi
Time of day 6:30 PM
Distance 0.25 mi
Comments Really sore from the marathon, but jogged a little bit with Nippette to loosen up. She probably wondered why all of a sudden I'm so slow. I'm taking the rest of the week off, but I'll go for a few long walks to keep my legs loose.

Comments Bleh. Tough race today.
I woke up at 4am to catch the subway to the Staten Island Ferry at 5:30am. The shuttle dropped me off at the starting line around 6:30am, so I had about three hours to kill before the race started. I got a small cup of coffee and chatted with an older man from Virginia about the Marine Corps Marathon. I headed over to the corral around 8:30 and jogged around a little bit. We were ushered onto the Verrazano-Narrows bridge around 9am and waited in the cold for 40 minutes before the start.
The first mile was slow - a combination of running through a big crowd and up the bridge's incline. The second mile was a minute faster for the opposite reasons - downhill and the field had thinned. I settled into a good pace right around 6:00/mile through the 10 mile mark. The numbers worried me, as I thought my marathon pace was closer to 6:10-6:20, but it felt so easy that I let my legs trump my brain. I should have known better, because the same thing happened in Chicago with a similar result for the second half...
At mile 12 I developed an awful cramp in my right ankle - something I've never felt before. I could feel the pain throughout my ankle, but it was mostly concentrated on the inside where the tibia bone ends. This was the point where things started going downhill. The pain lasted through mile 18, but by the time it abated I was a wreck. I think it's just a case of not having prepared enough for the race. I got a late start because of my torn tendon, and then once I started training I was a little too timid in my training. I really should have had my mileage up a lot higher than it was, but I was worried about re-injuring my foot and having to drop out of NYC. I now know that if I'm going to run a marathon, I have to do the work to succeed whether or not that puts me at a higher risk of injuring myself. After under-preparing for Chicago and NYC and getting similar results, I don't want to run another marathon without being ready for it.
It was great seeing so many people out on the course during the race. Billy Askey passed me somewhere in the middle (around mile 11?), Jake Klim was out there cheering in the middle of the street in Manhattan, Alex Voetch was at mile 14 right after the Queensboro bridge for a quick energy boost, Tim Hartnett passed be on 1st Avenue in Manhattan, and of course my girlfriend was out there at miles 18 and 23 cheering me on louder than anyone else. My sister and aunt also came out, but unfortunately they missed me at mile 23 by just a few minutes.
After the finish, we had to walk ridiculously far to reach the UPS trucks that held our bags. I stopped in the medical tent to get some ice for my back (which had tightened up only after finishing) and simply to sit for a minute. They weren't letting anyone sit or stretch in the finishing corral. I finally made it out at 77th and Columbus where I met my girlfriend and family and hopped in a cab to go get lunch.
All-in-all it was a good learning experience. I for sure won't go out over my head, whether it feels good or not, in Boston this spring. Better to leave some for the last few miles than to die a long, painful death again.
