Comments Bleh. Tough race today.

I woke up at 4am to catch the subway to the Staten Island Ferry at 5:30am. The shuttle dropped me off at the starting line around 6:30am, so I had about three hours to kill before the race started. I got a small cup of coffee and chatted with an older man from Virginia about the Marine Corps Marathon. I headed over to the corral around 8:30 and jogged around a little bit. We were ushered onto the Verrazano-Narrows bridge around 9am and waited in the cold for 40 minutes before the start.

The first mile was slow - a combination of running through a big crowd and up the bridge's incline. The second mile was a minute faster for the opposite reasons - downhill and the field had thinned. I settled into a good pace right around 6:00/mile through the 10 mile mark. The numbers worried me, as I thought my marathon pace was closer to 6:10-6:20, but it felt so easy that I let my legs trump my brain. I should have known better, because the same thing happened in Chicago with a similar result for the second half...

At mile 12 I developed an awful cramp in my right ankle - something I've never felt before. I could feel the pain throughout my ankle, but it was mostly concentrated on the inside where the tibia bone ends. This was the point where things started going downhill. The pain lasted through mile 18, but by the time it abated I was a wreck. I think it's just a case of not having prepared enough for the race. I got a late start because of my torn tendon, and then once I started training I was a little too timid in my training. I really should have had my mileage up a lot higher than it was, but I was worried about re-injuring my foot and having to drop out of NYC. I now know that if I'm going to run a marathon, I have to do the work to succeed whether or not that puts me at a higher risk of injuring myself. After under-preparing for Chicago and NYC and getting similar results, I don't want to run another marathon without being ready for it.

It was great seeing so many people out on the course during the race. Billy Askey passed me somewhere in the middle (around mile 11?), Jake Klim was out there cheering in the middle of the street in Manhattan, Alex Voetch was at mile 14 right after the Queensboro bridge for a quick energy boost, Tim Hartnett passed be on 1st Avenue in Manhattan, and of course my girlfriend was out there at miles 18 and 23 cheering me on louder than anyone else. My sister and aunt also came out, but unfortunately they missed me at mile 23 by just a few minutes.

After the finish, we had to walk ridiculously far to reach the UPS trucks that held our bags. I stopped in the medical tent to get some ice for my back (which had tightened up only after finishing) and simply to sit for a minute. They weren't letting anyone sit or stretch in the finishing corral. I finally made it out at 77th and Columbus where I met my girlfriend and family and hopped in a cab to go get lunch.

All-in-all it was a good learning experience. I for sure won't go out over my head, whether it feels good or not, in Boston this spring. Better to leave some for the last few miles than to die a long, painful death again.

Comments First portion of the run was 9.45 miles in just over an hour - Lusty, Tyle, and Pinto took it our hard, dipping down to just above 5:30/mile pace for the last 3-4 miles, and I was running with Greg Hartnett not too far back. We made it back to Fauver around 9.45 miles and then Mueller, Tyle, and I continued on to run a early worm to make it 15 miles. The worm was slower, which was welcome. It felt good to be back running around Mt. Hope. Perfect weather.

Great to see all the men for the weekend. It's always good to be back in Rochester.

Comments Bleh. Not the greatest race. It was raining and had been for days beforehand, so the course was really muddy. I got out relatively well and hit the 1k in 3:30ish, then hit the mile around 5:30ish, but my pace slipped from there. I realized that running in deep mud is essentially a process of accelerating and slipping, over and over. It's hard to get into a rhythm like you can on the roads. Anyway, I'm not too concerned about the performance - it was more like a hard tempo run. Ran back to Fauver with Roosa after the race and had a creamer in the shower before getting lunch with my mom.

Comments Final leg (#28) only an hour after my previous leg (#26). Because we only had 11 men on the team, we had to make up for 3 extra legs. Because legs #5 and #6 were cancelled, only one person had to run 4 legs, and that person was me. Thankfully this was a shorter leg, but that didn't make it any easier. There were a lot of stop lights to contend with, but I did the best I could. At least I didn't have to wear a reflective vest and headlamp.

Approximately 13 kills before handing off to Nolan.

After finishing our van's legs, we handed off to van 2 and drove to the finish line at National Harbor. Team RunPartner.com ended up finishing 8th overall in the race, which means we caught and passed ("killed") 253 teams. We won the race in a course record time of 2:02:05, even with the 37 minute delay from the first two legs. It was a great race, and we all raced hard. I had a lot of fun getting the old crew back together.

Comments RAGNAR RELAY 2011 - Day 2

I took the baton from Mueller at exchange 15 around midnight for leg 16 -- a rolling 5.2 mile leg, which ended up being the foggiest, darkest run I've ever done. I was wearing my 300 lumen headlamp, but could still only see about 4 feet in front of me. The fog made it feel like I was running through a snow storm. I wore my glasses for the first couple of miles, but took them off after realizing I could see just as poorly without them. Probably the weirdest part about running in total darkness is not knowing when you're going to hit a hill until you're running up or down it and not knowing for how long it's going to last.

I passed off to Nolan after a pretty good run.

Great relay race from Cumberland, Maryland through DC to the National Harbor. All of the guys on the team raced their hearts our, and we were rewarded with a course record - breaking the old record (2008) by 1 hour and 32 minutes.

I ran legs 1, 16, 25, and 28 for a total of 16.5 miles.

We arrived in Cumberland, Maryland around 3:15pm on Friday afternoon. After checking in and going through the safety briefing, i jogged about a mile to shake out my legs after a long van ride from DC. We were the only team to show up for the last wave (the other teams that were scheduled to be in our wave had either dropped out or had started early at 2pm), so I had to run the first stretch around Lake Habeeb alone in the rain. Tyle got on the line with me, and we ran the first 200 meters together. I was keeping a good pace around the slippery trails and made it to a mile to go just over 20 minutes, then I took a wrong turn. Or, more accurately, the turn I was supposed to take was not marked. Because we started so far after the next closest team, the volunteers were all cleaning up and leaving their stations, which meant that both Tyle and I made wrong turns. Mine resulted in a 7 minute delay, and Tyle's in a 30 minute delay.

After handing off to Tyle, I jogged around a little bit and hopped in the van for the next check mark where Tyle handed off to Mueller.

Mueller then handed off to Nolan before we had to skip over legs 5 and 6 due to muddy roads. Ezra started running leg 7 around 7:30pm, and we hooked up with them at exchange 7 to drop off walkie talkies and the slap bracelet that we used for a baton. We didn't see the crew again until around 10:30-11pm at exchange 12 after some really hot showers at a local high school.

My next leg did not occur until around midnight, so check tomorrow's RP entry for the rest of the details from Ragnar.
